PROUDLY BAKING FOR PRIDE

At Ole & Steen, we want all our guests, including those within the LGBTQ+ community, to feel that our bakeries are a place to feel at peace and have a Hygge moment. Sometimes those moments lend themselves as a time to reflect and prepare for important conversations, as well as having them with friends or external support. Bigger conversations, such as how to deal with coming out, coming to terms with your sexual identity and where to find the support you may need, can often be easier to prepare for or have when shared over a cake and coffee, so should you need a space, our door will remain open for everyone.

Because we value the importance of conversation, this year we are supporting LGBTQ+ charity Switchboard, by donating 50p of every Pride Brownie sold throughout the month of June and including London Pride weekend.

SUMMER LIKE A DANE

As longer days and warmer weather lie ahead, ‘Al Desko’ quickly turns to Al Fresco, which means city parks will set the perfect scene for your lunch break with colleagues or family picnics. But the usual picnic snacks will soon tire, so why not enjoy the fresh summer air the Danish way by introducing some traditional Danish Open Rye sandwiches to your spread?

Not forgetting, there’s no summer spread without something sweet, and we really do have some berry-fic refreshing delights to share with you this Summer.

We are delighted to announce that this Spring we will be partnering with Disney's FROZEN – the beloved animated film that always gives us chills – now playing in London’s West End. For the first time in forever, the Theatre Royal Drury Lane has reopened its doors, bringing Elsa and Anna’s story to the stage in this heart-melting theatrical production, and what better way to celebrate this dream partnership than with a complete Disney makeover of our nearby bakeries and a fun little 'hyggelig' competition. Find out more here.

For this partnership we are are also introducing a limited edition Hygge Marshmallow Whip. This 'hygge' treat is a variation on our Coconut Marshmallow Whip, this whip is made by using our plain marshmallow on a thin marzipan base, then covered in white chocolate and blue coconut shavings.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

FASTELAVN is my name… This line sings out of the mouths of joyful Danish children (and young-at-heart adults) this time of year, as they go door to door trick or treating in Danish neighbourhoods in full costumes for the Danish pre-lent festival - Fastelavn.

This light-spirited celebration is full of colours, costumes, games, joy and laughter but, like any other Danish tradition there would be no real celebration without food.

Buns up, buns down. Buns in my belly… as the song of Fastelavn continues we are introduced to what many considers to be the best part of Fastelavn – Fastelavnsboller or Festival Buns as we call them over here.

COMBINING TRADITIONS – MERINGUE GIRL COLLABORATION

Our skilful bakers have been sleigh-in' it again for this Christmas, as they have crafted a deliciously creamy treat, which not only celebrates one festive tradition, but two. For this year's holiday season, we are introducing the Mince Pie Festival Bun. A bun that combines the traditional English Mince Pie flavours together with a festive Danish classic 'Fastelavnsbolle'.

To make this masterpiece even more special, we’ve collaborated with the Meringue Girls, as we crown our Festival Bun with an exclusive, golden mince pie meringue kiss.

The Meringue Girls story began in 2012. Their female founders met while working as chefs in a restaurant kitchen in East London. As they bonded over a love of all things sweet and saw a gap in the market. They began introducing their meringue creations via London’s booming street food scene, which quickly becoming an Instagram sensation, working for clients such as Jimmy Choo, Chanel and now with Ole & Steen.

Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming activity including festive giveaways on our Instagram page.

NEW PARTNERSHIP TO MINIMISE FOOD WASTE

Sustainability has always been of most importance. Throughout our product's life cycle, from baking through to how you enjoy your products at home, we’ve always worked continuously hard to ensure we can minimise food waste where possible, with much of our leftover bread and pastries being reused where possible in other products, for example leftover bread can be safely used to make bread cream, a starter for new breads.

In our pursuit to further minimise food waste, we are super excited to announce our partnership with the leading food waste platform Too Good To Go. The partnership means that all our bakeries in the UK are now signed up to the Too Good To Go app so that surplus baked goods are eaten and enjoyed rather than wasted.

Simply download the free Too Good To Go app and search for your nearby Ole & Steen. You can then purchase a ‘Magic Bag’ for £5, collect it at an allotted time and enjoy it. Our Magic Bags contain a variety of surplus baked goods - from Cinnamon Socials to loaves of fresh bread - worth at least £15 if sold at normal retail price. #NoWaste.GreatTaste
